Harmonium 101:

A Hands-On Introduction to the Heartbeat of Bhakti Music

with Jen Lo

April 6, 2025

Come explore the resonant and heart-stirring Indian instrument, the harmonium. This 3-hour workshop begins and ends with kirtan (call-and-response group chanting) and offers a hands-on introduction to this soulful instrument. You'll learn a brief history of the harmonium and how it arrived in India, gain an overview of Bhakti yoga and mantra, and take a close look at the instrument’s mechanics — learning how it works and how to position your body in relation to the keyboard. With guided instruction, you'll practice playing a simple mantra and build confidence in bringing music into your own practice.

Details:

Sunday | 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

This workshop is open to all, whether you're new to the harmonium, a teacher interested in leading mantra in your classes, or an experienced kirtan singer looking for new melodies. Shared practice harmoniums will be provided, making it an accessible opportunity to explore before committing to your own instrument. By the end, you'll leave with a deeper understanding of the harmonium, its role in devotional music, and the ability to play one song with confidence. Upon successful completion, yoga teachers may apply these (3) hours toward BYC’s 300-Hr Advanced Yoga Studies Program or Yoga Alliance continuing education hours.

CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY FOR TRAININGS

Registration for all events, including trainings and immersion workshops, is non-refundable. However, if you cannot attend, you may transfer your spot to another person by contacting us via phone, email, or in person.

We understand that plans can change, but our no-refund policy helps us maintain the quality and sustainability of our offerings. Organizing events requires significant time, effort, and resources from both the studio and our teachers. In addition, many of our trainings & workshops have limited spacing — last-minute cancellations not only prevent others from attending, but also affect the viability of the event for our dedicated instructors. As a small, local business, your understanding and cooperation not only helps us support our teachers, but also allows us to continue providing enriching experiences for our community!
